Parent Coaching
Do you have a child who…
…has emerging body image distress, and you can’t seem to say the right thing no matter how well intentioned?
…just returned home from a higher level of care treatment program and you’re feeling overwhelmed?
…has big reactions to day-to-day life and you’re not sure how to support them through these emotions?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, I’d love to work with you!
What is Parent Coaching?
Parent Coaching is a service that takes place either alongside individual work or as its own offering for anyone who considers themself a parent or caregiver. In this context, “parent” is used as a verb, not a noun, to include anyone who parents a young person!
During a coaching session, we will explore the unique challenges you face while parenting, identify areas of tension or conflict, and develop a toolbox of skills that you can use to repair or better your relationship.
Who is Coaching for?
Anyone in a caregiver role (often parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles) looking for more tools to support their child. Coaching typically does not include the individual; this is an opportunity for parents to speak freely without fear of offending their person, and for the therapist to provide education and skills to help reduce the child’s burden.
Why Parent Coaching?
For many, family and systems-level growth is just as important as individual healing. Whether your child is in individual therapy and you want to grow alongside them, or you’re looking for short-term support during a life/family transition, you deserve a space of your own to process, ask questions without being judged and learn communication and attunement skills.
How does this work?
Coaching sessions, by nature, are usually more structured than individual therapy. We might start by putting together an agenda to tackle in session that day. The session content will likely vary week by week, but could be a combination of Q&A, education related to your child’s development or mental health profile, skill building, practicing skills, as well as space to process your own personal content.
Parent Coaching for Eating Disorders
No one knows your child like you do
While it is always painful seeing your child in distress, there’s nothing quite like the unique challenge and chaos that eating disorders can bring to a family unit. Eating disorders have a way of spreading shame, guilt and blame, whether you are the one carrying this burden, or your loved one is.
I am trained in Family Based Treatment (FBT), or the Maudsley Method, for the treatment of eating disorders in children and adolescents. However, I recognize that every family has unique needs and circumstances that require individualized care.
When it comes to working with families in eating disorder treatment, I hold the following beliefs:
No one knows your child like you do.
You did not cause your child’s eating disorder.
Your love, support and belief in your child is essential in their recovery.
There might be ways that you are unintentionally reinforcing the eating disorder. We can identify and change these behaviors together.
Recovery is possible.
Whether this has been a lifelong struggle, or you’re just noticing budding body image distress, eating disorders are complex, painful and nearly impossible to carry alone. I’d be honored to support you on your recovery journey.
